EXPERIENCE
Maria Smithburg's experience in landscape architecture over the
last thirteen years has included master planning to completed
projects, such as urban parks and residential gardens. While
working at the Chicago Park District from 1988 to 1992 she was
responsible for presenting her work at public meetings and
working with community groups. Prior to working in the public
service, she spent her time designing commercial and
institutional landscapes for SOM from Chicago, Illinois and for
Walker-Kluesing Design Group from Boston, Massachusetts.
She's been running her own practice since 1992 and is currently
working on gardens in the Chicago area as well as in Harbor

between buildings and open space within an artistic context.
Her academic pursuit has involved teaching landscape design
theory at the University of Illinois in Chicago from 1988 to 1992.
She has also taught garden design courses at the Chicago
Botanic Garden from 1993 to 1994 which focused on
landscape elements that provide the opportunity for personal and
cultural expression.
She has lectured at the Chicago Botanic Garden, The Arts Club
